Changing Places: Enhancing accessibility at Morrow Street Rest Centre

The redevelopment of the Morrow Street Rest Centre in Wagga Wagga is a testament to the power of inclusive design. Implemented by Wagga Wagga City Council, the project responds to the need for fully accessible public amenities, incorporating a Changing Places facility equipped with a change table and hoist to accommodate individuals with severe or profound disabilities.

Originating in the UK in 2006 and formalized as a British Standard in 2009, the Changing Places model has gained international recognition as a benchmark for accessible public restrooms. In Australia, the initiative continues to expand, with facilities like the ‘Marveloo’—a mobile Changing Places unit—and permanent installations such as this redevelopment playing a critical role in promoting equity and social inclusion.

Changing Places is considered a best practice example of universal design principles, with requirements additional and separate to AS1428.1. Along with meeting requirements to Changing Places accreditation, we also selected the colour and materials palette. The colour of mint green, cool grey and white to provide a refreshing, clean aesthetic.

As strong advocates for equitable public spaces, our firm is proud to contribute to projects that make a meaningful impact on the local community. The success of Changing Places not only improves accessibility but also fosters a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
