Stunning update in the transitional style aesthetic

This recently completed additions and alterations project sought to enhance spatial functionality and strengthen the connection between interior and exterior spaces. Our role as architects was to reimagine a traditional 1980s floor plan through a contemporary open-plan layout while preserving the home’s original footprint.

A key design intervention was the introduction of a new parallel wing, carefully positioned to frame a central courtyard and pergola, creating a seamless dialogue between the existing structure and the addition. The reconfigured layout optimises circulation, enhancing livability and reinforcing a sense of cohesion throughout the home.

At the heart of the design is a striking new kitchen, where materiality plays a defining role. A refined composition of blond-grained timber, heavily veined marble, and black-framed joinery establishes a dynamic contrast—balancing warmth, texture, and timeless elegance. Expansive folding glass doors extend from the dining area to an oversized alfresco space, dissolving boundaries between indoors and out and further emphasizing the modernized spatial arrangement.

The addition also incorporates a new master suite, complete with a spacious walk-in robe and ensuite, offering a private retreat within the home. A three-car garage introduces both functional flexibility and ample storage, ensuring the residence meets the evolving needs of its occupants.

Executed with precision by Balding Constructions, the project was further elevated through a collaboration with Stjohn Axbey Design, whose expertise in interior refinement contributed to a cohesive and beautifully resolved outcome. Since completion, landscaping, furniture selection, and styling have further enriched the home’s aesthetic, completing a transformation that seamlessly blends contemporary living with timeless appeal.

Special thanks to Grant Higginson of Cut Above Productions for capturing this project in its completed form.

Our first experience of working with an architect was very positive and worthwhile overall.
Ours was a particularly challenging project in terms of the design and design implementation, because both the extension and the renovation aspects of the project were extensive and complex.
The GPG team was very professional throughout, and we are very happy with the end result.
Gioia’s many suggestions to improve the original plans were practical and helpful.
We are now very proud of our forever home and grateful for all the help we received from GPG to reach this goal.
All the very best to the team we hope 2022 is a great year for you all.
