Utilising Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Better Co-Ordination and Better Buildings

When people think about architecture, they often picture creative ideas, sketches and finished buildings. What many don't see is the immense amount of coordination that happens behind the scenes to ensure every element of a building works together before construction begins.

At GPG Architecture, Building Information Modelling (BIM) has become an integral part of how we deliver well-coordinated, buildable and efficient projects. BIM enables our team to create an intelligent three-dimensional model where architectural, structural and building services information is coordinated within a single digital environment. As we gather separate drawings from multiple consultants, everyone works collaboratively to identify and resolve potential issues before construction starts.

For our clients, this means better coordination, greater accuracy, fewer surprises during construction, reduced risk of costly variations, and a smoother building process. One of GPG Architecture's greatest strengths is our collaborative approach. We have developed long-standing working relationships with trusted consultants including Building Services Group in Albury for hydraulic, mechanical and electrical engineering, and Xeros Piccolo in Wagga Wagga for structural and civil engineering. Working together within a BIM environment allows our teams to coordinate architecture, structure and services from the earliest stages of design, resulting in more efficient, practical and integrated outcomes.

Leading this process is our experienced BIM Technician, Lee-Anne, whose expertise in digital modelling and documentation forms the backbone of many of our projects. Working alongside Lee-Anne is Barbara, our Graduate of Architecture, who has recently joined the team and is embracing BIM as an integral part of her professional development. Together with Hamish Hocking, our experienced Building Designer, the documentation team works collaboratively to produce highly coordinated models and detailed construction documentation that support successful project delivery.

While technology plays an important role, BIM is ultimately about people working together. Architects are uniquely positioned to coordinate the many disciplines involved in a project, bringing together clients, engineers, consultants and builders to achieve a common vision. Effective communication and coordination are just as important as creative design.
